It never ceases to amaze me how so many players seem to go through a new MMO launch as if it were their first.  The never ending cries of queue this and queue that, fail this and fail that.  In the immortal words of Terry Tate office linebacker "that ain't nothing new baby."  Every new MMO launch I've been a part of had queues and ArcheAge is no different.  Why it seems to surprise people at this point is beyond me.

I recall sitting in queue for 8 hours when Aion launched.  Players abused the auto afk system by creating jumping macros so they'd never get booted off.  When Rift launched there were constant 2-3 hour queues which were sort of helped along by client crashes.  The Old Republic was unplayable on release.  GW2 sort of made it better with the overflow server system but i spent more time on that server than my own the first entire week of launch.  Hell, i'm currently playing WoW and i still hit queues in the evenings on my server.

The bottom line is that this should be expected at this point and getting angry about it is silly.  If anything, i assume that i won't be able to log in on launch and i find something else to do.  Ironically though, i had no issues logging in once the ftp accounts were turned on.  None until prime time of course which is to be expected.

My goals for launch day were pretty simple.

- Create Han Solo or something resembling him.  Check!

ArcheAge

- Log in.  Check!

ArcheAge

- Get my horse Sirdidymus.  Check!

ArcheAge

ArcheAge

ArcheAge

- Create my Shadowknight class.  Check!

ArcheAge

That's pretty much as far as i got.  The evil queue monster got me when it came time to make some dinner.  I'll probably do some scenery runs tomorrow and begin working on my build a bit more.

I thought i'd share my incredibly simple yet extremely useful Weak Auras 2 strings i created for my Unholy Death Knight.  These are by no means perfect and, as with any UI related modification, they're a work in progress and never final.  These get the job done for me and my play style while remaining as clutter free as possible.  I still utilize and take advantage of the standard Blizzard visual cues for procs on Dark Transformation as well as Sudden Doom while adding stack counts and time remaining with Weak Auras.  In total i have seven aspects i like to keep track of and monitor during the course of an encounter.

  1. Frost Fever- Disease
  2. Blood Plague - Disease
  3. Determination - Trinket Proc from Thok's Tail Tip
  4. Outrage - Trinket Proc from Evil Eye of Galakras
  5. Shadow Infusion - Stacks
  6. Dark Transformation - Time Remaining
  7. Soul Reaper - Proc @ 37% with Sound Effect

Old content may be old to most but it's still new to me.  Going back and soloing past raids gives me a glimpse of the content that i missed over the years.  It's a small glimpse not seeing all this content at current difficulty but it is what it is.  What i would've given to be able to participate in Ulduar while it was current.  It, along with Karazhan and ICC, have to be my favorite raids aesthetically.

Glory of the Ulduar Raider

The first time i flew up to Ulduar i was amazed.  The size and scope of the outer architecture was just astonishing.  The word epic came to mind it and didn't fail to amaze once inside.  The place was so huge it had to have a freaking train to get to a boss.  Off topic, but the first thing that came to mind when i made it to the train was Final Fantasy.  It just sort of had that futuristic fantasy steam punk vibe.

Looking forward to seeing some more old content before the expansion.  For now i get to enjoy my new Rusted Proto-Drake mount.  My collection is still small but it'll get there eventually.

Oh the joys of playing a new race and discovering new and interesting animations.  I've become so used to playing a blood elf at this point that i assumed every race had a standard pose or animation when it came to hitching a ride on an albatross on Timeless Isle.  Boy was i wrong!  I had a good chuckle for a bit when i hopped on one with my orc Shaman.  Apparently albatross have a taste for orc head.

World of Warcraft

I can't believe i'm actually considering this but SE is holding another Return Home to Campaign on 9/10 -9/17.  I say another but this is actually the first i'm hearing about any such campaign.  This is probably mostly due to the game falling off my radar for the last four plus years though.  While i of course always think about giving the game a whirl again, i never actually end up doing it.  I said by goodbyes and moved on almost five years ago now.  The itch is always there though, as with any game someone spends a ridiculous amounts of time in.

This time i'm seriously considering hopping in and running around thanks to the free week.  That's pretty much all i'll be doing though as i have no intention or interest in anything related to content post level 75. That's where the game still lives in my mind and everything after that to the current level 99 cap is of no interest.  The essence of the original game up to level 75 seems to have been destroyed and replaced with a more modern system of gear progression.  That to me is a foreign concept for this game and goes against everything it was built on.  Had this have happened early on in the game's history i would have been all for it but doing so after so many years seems like a last ditch effort to hold on to players.

I'm looking forward to just logging in and exploring the game world.  That's the aspect that i sorely miss the most.  It was huge, sometimes dangerous, and almost always lead me in the wrong direction.  Some zones required cooperation from multiple players to even cross.  I'm talking pressure plates to open doors or even levers that required players on opposite ends of zones to hit.  It was absolutely maddening at times but so much more fun in the long run.

A chocobo ride through The Sancuary of Zi'Tah is worth the price of admission just for the atmosphere and music alone.  I think i'm going to scratch that nostalgia itch in a few weeks.

After a bit of slacking over the past two weeks, i managed to finish off my Shaman leveling last night.  This will be my fifth and probably last class for a long while.  Well, at least that's what i keep telling myself.  I may actually stick to it this time with the expansion only a few months away.  My current goal is to attempt to finish off another legendary cloak before Warlords drops.  That may be a bit tricky unless Blizzard gives us a few more reputation and currency buffs before then but i'm going for it regardless.  Either way, Enhancement Shaman is ridiculous fun.

Quintessential Quintet

First i'd like to thank Bhagpuss for pointing me in the direction of this survey originally proposed by Alt: ernative.  A simple 10 question survey to commemorate the upcoming 10-year anniversary of World of Warcraft.  At first i was hesitant to even participate since i'm a relative newcomer to the game and didn't really have a history with either WoW or Blizzard.  Then after thinking about it for a bit i realized that perhaps my views from a "newbie" perspective might be interesting to some.  So here goes:

1. Why did you start playing World of Warcraft?

The honest response is that i never in a million years thought i would ever play WoW.  As an old school FFXI player, i can remember WoW's release coinciding with my first ever max level character.  A feat that took me 8 months at the time to accomplish.  The word on the street at the time was that this new MMO made leveling easier without the need for groups grinding exp.

I was actually disgusted at the notion of cooperation not really being needed to progress in levels. Despite never having tried the game, i became obsessed with bashing and denouncing it every chance i got.  "It was too easy" or "it's for little kids" were tossed around any time someone even mentioned it. Looking back at it now, most of my responses were due in part to the realization that we were losing a hell of a lot of players to WoW and i resented that.

My biggest reason for not playing it was actually the art style.  I hated it.  To this day i'm not really a fan but i can see why many enjoy it.  I'm more of a fan of realistic looking characters, which i can identify with much easier.  The low poly count, while contributing to the smoothness of the game, didn't help convince me to get over the art either.  I guess you could say i was a graphics junkie and WoW offered me nothing in that category.

Fast forward nine years.

I had just stopped playing GW2.  My main reasoning for doing so, despite loving the majority of the game, was due in part to how much it made me miss the trinity.  I didn't enjoy the PVE aspects at all and since i'm not much of a PVP'er, i decided to move on.

After a short stint in EQ2, which i absolutely loved, i decided to give WoW an honest chance.  My issue with EQ2 at the time was that i found it incredibly difficult to get anything done without a solid guild.  I'm usually in favor of this but i was unsure of my commitment to the game so i didn't want to join a guild and then stop playing.  I'm usually very loyal to guilds or groups i decide to join.

It was around December of 2013 and i had noticed that WoW was on sale for $15, which included every expansion plus MoP.  I said what the hell and went for it.  It remains very fresh to me eight months later and so much so that I've preordered the upcoming expansion.  Whether or not i continue playing down the road remains to be seen but so far so good.

2. What is the first ever character you rolled?

My first ever character was a human female Hunter.  This was not my first choice though.  My favorite archetype, and one i played mainly during my FFXI days, was a Dark Knight.  Naturally this made me want to roll a Death Knight.  Much to my disappointment, i soon realized i could not roll one until i reached level 55 on another class first.  My choice of Hunter came down to always being a fan of ranged bow classes as well.

3. What factors determined your faction choice in game?

I always play a human in any MMO i play.  Well i shouldn't say always i suppose.  I played an Elf in XI and always regretted it.  Had we had the opportunity to race change in that game, i'd have been the first to do so. The choice of faction was made for me since humans are Alliance.  Of course this changed when i ran into some friends that were playing as they convinced me to reroll to Horde.  I obliged and made the switch to blood elf, which honestly look much better that humans in WoW.  I'm not a fan of the overly bulky look humans have going but that's for another time.

4. What has been your most memorable moment in Warcraft and why?

Since i have not been playing long, i don't have any great stories.  All my most memorable moments of crazy kills and drama happened in FFXI.  I will say that when i finally unlocked the ability to make a Death Knight and created my first one, i felt that i had finally arrived.  I felt more at home if you will.

5. What is your favorite aspect of the game and has this always been the case?

I actually have two aspects of the game that i love.  The first one being the super smooth and responsive combat.  It may sound crazy to players that are used to it but I've played enough MMO's in my time to understand that this is a rarity.  The average typical MMO combat outside of WoW is clunky and slow with terrible mechanics that may make a player want to punch puppies.  There are a few exceptions of course.

My second would be the classes themselves.  They're all pretty fun to play and allow for multiple ways to be played.  You'd be surprised how many MMO's force you into one play style for each class.  Want to play a Death Knight?  Then you have to be a tank!  It's incredibly nice having the option to switch roles without having to switch classes.  I get to play the class i enjoy without having to play the role i do not.

6. Do you have an area in game that you always return to?

I absolutely despise the Outland zones while i absolutely adore the Wrath zones.  I tend to just fly around ICC and Ulduar when i have nothing else going on.  Taking in the grand scale of both places makes me feel all warm and cozy inside.  Ignoring all the snow of course, even though i love snow.

7. How long have you /played and has that been continuous?

I've been playing continuously now for about eight months.  I never thought i'd last this long honestly.  I have a very old school mentality of playing one MMO for very long and not bouncing around.  At least that's what i want to do.  This hasn't been the case at all these past four years.  I've recently just passed GW2 in hours played with 1700 and am close to reaching and surpassing my time played in Rift which would put WoW second behind my ridiculous 31,000 hours played in FFXI.

8. Admit it: do you read quest text or not?

Story quests yes.  Fed ex quests and exp quests no.  I can't remember the last time i actually even looked at a quest bubble, let alone read one.  I'm just not interested in the back story of an NPC i'm killing rats for. Give me my gold and i'll be on my way.

9. Are there any regrets from your time in game?

A pretty large one actually.  I regret not giving the game an actual chance a long time ago.  I had these preconceived notions of the game that i refused to look beyond out of some unfounded loyalty for a game i was playing a decade ago.  Not to say that i don't have issues with the current game because i have a ton, but i feel i could have been enjoying myself in the game a lot earlier had i overcome my stubbornness.

10. What effects has Warcraft had on your life outside gaming?

I wish i could say none but that wouldn't be true.  It's amazing how much one can accomplish when they're not forced to be in game 24/7.  A decade ago i was actually on call at all hours of the day for the MMO i was playing.  It required a ridiculous amount of hours to accomplish anything.  While i'm not so much a fan of the complete opposite side of the spectrum that WoW decided to go, it's nice being able to get some sleep now!  This didn't start with WoW, for me anyways, but it has continued so i felt i should mention it.

It's official.  I've made the switch from Frost DK to Unholy DK and i absolutely love it.  My initial hesitation to do so earlier was mostly in part to my utter dislike of pets and pet classes in general.  I don't like managing them and they tend to do more harm than good sometimes.  The irony is not lost on me seeing as all four of the classes that i have at cap are technically pet classes now.  I'm not sure how this happened but i don't like it!  I don't like it one bit.

I originally fell in love with the Frost DK play style.  It's fast and furious while maintaining the dual wield aesthetic that i also love.  Unfortunately it also lacks any sort of variety and has devolved into a two button rotation spam that's honestly quite dull.  While i appreciate the basics of the spec, i wanted something a little more involved so i turned to Unholy.

The basics of the spec revolves around lining up as many buffs as possible at the start of the fight, including trinket procs and consumables, to boost diseases as much as possible.  The goal then is to keep those diseases going for as long as possible while watching the ridiculous damage numbers roll by.  It's a lot of fun when everything lines up but can also be a royal pain in the ass when they don't.  That's the interesting aspect of the spec and one i'm enjoying quite a bit.

Of course one cannot just switch to a new spec without changing ones appearance accordingly.  Gone is my frosty blue transmog set in favor of a green one that's fits more closely to the disease based play style.  It's a work in progress as usual but it's definitely getting there.  The tabard is temporary until i get enough reputation for Battle Tabard of the Defilers. If only i could decide between a two handed sword or a two handed axe.  They both fit rather well i think.  It's unfortunate that my legendary cape looks out of place now but i'll manage.

As per usual, i love taking screenshots in game.  I grabbed as many as i thought looked good or at least were interesting enough to show off the game.  While these only show off my experience during my first ten levels, they're a decent indicator of how fantastic the game looks in general.  It does look gorgeous.
