Being a nerd and using their game tracking software finally payed off.  Well, technically I've received tons of rewards from them in the past, but never anything of value.  This time around i was rewarded with the Storm Legion expansion for free, which included four new souls, and an adorable Raptr mini-pet.

Having not really played the game since prior to GW2's launch, i was amazed to see the land mass almost tripled in size.  As usual, this comes with ten more levels, but that's to be expected.  Unfortunately this also means that my top tier Hammerknell gear is replaced by quest greens.  I was shocked at the explosion in stats when i went to check out the current raid gear vendor.  I thought it was bad going from River of Souls to Hammerknell, but this takes the cake.  At the same time, it does make it easier to play catch up i suppose, but I'm not really interested in returning at this time with FFXIV around the corner.

It didn't take me long to figure out what that new back slot was for either.  I fucking love capes and cloaks!  I like seeing them in every MMO, especially if they're used for guild representation of some sort, complete with logos and art work.  So naturally, the first thing i did was figure out how to get my first one from a quest, which didn't take long.  They have a nice upgrade feature as well which i accidentally completed without looking.

The new rogue soul, Tactitian, is ridiculous.  It's essentially a bazooka wielding, AoE death machine that can also drop heals.  Similar in many ways to GW2's Engineer.  So far it seems more like a solo farming soul for now but i haven't really dug into it yet.  It does mow down lots of mobs at once at a rapid pace though.

The first thing i thought of, when i loaded up Tactitian and headed out to quest on a map that looks like is from outer space mind you, is how much it reminded me of the alien bounty hunters from Critters!  Toss in some Ghostbusters and you're ready to roll on to 60.  I had to get an 80's movie reference in here somehow.

Since I'm unable to create a character on a legacy server and play with my guild, i thought I'd spend most of my time going through the character creator.  While the overall options are rather nice and seem plentiful at first glance, they rather lack where i believe it counts.  That would of course be the hair style options.  As someone who always hides my helmet option in game, this is the most important character creation option.  Having less than 20 selections to chose from, when games like Aion have over 50, is a real bummer.  Hell, some of the hair options are identical minus a different color hair accessory.  How am i supposed to make my Han Solo without all the options to do so?!  Despite those limitations, I'm rather pleased with the rest of the options.

Completing 8 of the 12 possible Dragon Bash achievements rewards you with a holographic skin for your back slot.  It just happens to be a skin similar to The Shatterer's wings, which i always thought looked fantastic.  The achievements themselves are pretty simple, which always annoys me.  I'd prefer tasks a little more difficult that just running around and clicking on stuff or eating dozens and dozens on newly implemented treats.  I imagine every single player will have one of these by the time this event is over, and i suppose that's ok since it is just an event.  I'd still like the events themselves to be a bit more involved than they are though.

I had to toss my wings on my guardian since i just spent almost half of my money upgrading my thief's back slot with the fractal capacitor.  I don't mind though since it seems to fit much better with plate armor and color scheme I'm using anyways.  There goes the fractal back piece i had on him though!

I decided to jump right into the new Dragon Bash PvP mini-game called Dragon Ball.  What better way to do so than using the Jack Burton method of just running right in without any prior knowledge?  Absolutely no better method of course.  Not knowing what you're supposed to do or what the hell the objective is can be and usually is a ton of fun.  Unfortunately, with most PvP related games, it generally boils down to running around and killing people and Dragon Ball is no exception.  Regardless, it was still a ton of fun launching around and shooting fireballs at people.

More mini-pets is always a good thing.  Many players were greeted with a nice collection upon logging into the Dragon Bash festival.  Three came in the mail, while a fourth came from drops.  Unfortunately, i haven't had the chance to acquire the fifth one yet.  While neat and fitting of the theme, i find them a little difficult to see.  Nevertheless, being followed by a hologram is pretty cool.

A Realm Reborn

I was greeted with a pleasant surprise Thursday morning with a ARR beta invite in my box which i was anxiously awaiting for a while.  I was super excited to hop back into the MMO i had waited years for prior to it's initial release a few years ago, of which i dubbed "the worst MMO I'd ever played.  I still stand by that statement because it deserved it at the time.  Calling it a huge disappointment would have been an understatement.

Now comes ARR almost 3 years later and all i can say is wow.  I was shockingly surprised how much the game not only changed but improved over the last few years.  It's a completely different game now.  I have to give Yoshi credit for bringing Final Fantasy up to current standards, even if it's a few years late.  Some may argue, myself included, that it's finally caught up to MMO's of a few years ago.  That's obviously good and bad, but I'll stick to the good for now.

The game world is totally redone and looks amazing.  A game that looks this good should not run this well.  I have no idea how they're pulling this off, but I've run by groups of 30-40 players without a hitch.  I've run through lush forests with so much foliage that usually destroys my fps in other MMO's, and yet it's barely noticeable here.  The game runs smooth as silk so far.

My largest gripe with 1.0 was the combat.  It was slow, tedious, dull, and full of annoying animation locks that made everything you did feel clunky.  I was shocked to see all that is gone now.  Abilities can be used while moving now, for non-casted ones anyways, which makes everything feel really fluid.  There still seems to be some network issues that sometimes make it impossible to get out of red circles, but nowhere as bad as 1.0.

Next is the questing, which was virtually nonexistent in 1.0.  While it's improved now, it comes at a time when many players are just bored of the idea.  The interesting feature that's implemented now is a public quest or events system called Fates.  Hurray for more dynamic events, which i find a lot more fun than the old quest hub system.  Unfortunately it's not really fleshed out enough or occur frequently enough to replace questing, but it's a nice added bonus to break up the monotony.

I can also tell Final Fantasy players are not used to an open system of cooperation in PVE.  I tend to run up to areas and start attacking mobs that players are already fighting, which helps us both.  Then i proceed grab another mob, only to see the player i just helped run off and fight their own.  It's ok people, it's not hurting your exp and i won't bite!  Help out other players and they'll help you.

Finally comes the sleek and minimalist UI.  This is how i like my UI, nice and clean with little clutter.  Every element is movable and resizable, minus the mini-map i believe.  It might sound crazy to some but, you couldn't even drag and drop abilities or potions in 1.0.  Everything is as crisp and responsive as you'd expect now.  Welcome to 2013 Final Fantasy, it's nice to have you.

It obviously remains to be seen if there's enough content to quench the thirst of the rabid MMO players these days, but ARR is on the right track.  They've definitely convinced me to give them another shot, despite my insistence that i was done with Square-Enix after 1.0.  I'll be there in August on launch day ready to throw my money at them.  Don't let me down!
