During my leveling process, i fell in love with Mik Scrolling Battle Text.  It uncluttered all my damage numbers and condensed them into one simple frame.  Since i like minimal with less clutter, it was a perfect fit for my UI setup.  That is until i started doing some raids and reassessing my UI needs and layout functionality.

I realized how much i missed seeing damage numbers on top of enemy heads.  This was even more evident on trash pulls and adds.  Being able to see all the mobs i have dots rolling on individually is a lot more visual and intuitive than having them all combined together into one area.  Of course this creates a massive clusterfuck on my screen when there's lots of mobs but i actually seem to prefer it for this specific situation.

The other issue i had was how much i couldn't stand the default floating combat text font.  Not only is it a boring style but looked quite pixelated as well.  Well hurray for Font Damage Changer which let me change the text to any one of the hundred or so fonts i happen to already have for Photoshop projects.  Now my problem lies in actually choosing which one i like more than the next and sticking to it for more than a few hours.

World of Warcraft Level 90 Death Knight

After taking my sweet time, my frost DK finally hit the magical level cap.  I think i get the playstyle and overall requirements of the class to finally get into some more difficult content and, dare i say, raiding.  For now i think i'll run around Timeless Isle and gear up through the chests scattered all over the island.  I hear many deaths are awaiting me as i do that though so we'll see.  I'm rocking pretty much all quest greens so i have no doubts about that.  I also managed to snag a new mount which i'm assuming is the official "dk mount".  Onward to my treasure chests i go.

World of Warcraft Harrison Jones

As I've mentioned previously, i'm a huge fan of desert zones in my MMO's.  It was no secret i couldn't wait to get to Uldum for the first time.  I was curious how WoW implemented and handled my favorite MMO climate.  What came as a surprise once i began questing there was entire Indiana Jones tie in.  It was completely unexpected but i guess I've been living under a rock for nine years.

World of Warcraft Uldum

Since i'm a huge fan of both Indie and deserts, it should be no surprise i loved Uldum.  Loved every second of almost every quest there.  I was bummed to see that the exp range for the zone only covered one level.  I managed to stretch it out to a level and a half by doing everything minus the dungeons.  I'll probably go back and mess with them later.  For now it's off to Pandaland, monkeys, and possibly snakes.  Why'd it have to be snakes?

World of Warcraft Level 80 Death Knight

Mini milestone #2 this week in WoW, and that of course is my first level 80.  The last ten levels seemed to go way quicker than the previous ten.  I'm sure that had a bit to do with my enjoyment of Northrend and my utter dislike of Outland.  Not only were the quests much more interesting but so were the maps and terrain.  I waiting a while to cast this spell but its's finally here in all it's glory.

World of Warcraft Level 70 Death Knight

My first mini milestone in WoW had me dinging 70 on my DK.  Slowly but surely i'm making my way up to cap without feeling any reason to rush.  The only comment i can make is hurray for getting out of Outland!  I hated that place and all it's gloomy zones with a passion.  Next up was Northrend, though I did have some reservations from all the forums posters commenting on how much they hate it.  For me, it's been a way better leveling process so far and a much better open zone design.  Let's see if that continues.

Along with simply leveling up, i think I've spend just as much time fiddling with my UI trying to get it just right.  It's a work in progress that i have a feeling i'll never be completely happy with.  It serves it's purpose so far while remaining uncluttered and out of the way of unneeded junk.  I'm sure i'll continue to spend an ungodly amount of time tweaking it as i acquire more skills and spells.  Someone find me a better rune management addon that actually works!

I always play a human in every MMO since completely regretting not playing one for 6 years during my FFXI days.  It was obvious that to play one in WoW i would have to roll with Alliance.  Since i knew nothing of either side, i didn't even give it a second thought.  That was until everyone i know informed me of the error in my ways.  I was bombarded with "no one plays alliance!" and so on and so forth.  It seemed like lots of people play them from where i was standing so i wrote it off as faction pride.

Then i did the unthinkable - i rerolled from human!  It made me sick to my stomach at first to be quite honest but since everyone i know plays/played  Horde, it made the decision much easier.  I typically can't get into my characters if they're some funky race i can't identify with and Horde sure does have a lot of those. Fortunately for me, there are blood elves, which look as least close enough to humans that i can manage.

I went from the heavily Alliance server of Stromrage to the opposite spectrum on Area-52.  While it's still taking some getting used to, i can say that i am enjoying the blood elf combat animations.  I'm assuming they're different right?  They seem so to me at least.  Thanks to a generous loan i managed to get my flying license along with my first flying mount.  It's sure made a difference in the speed of which i can complete quests.  It helps being able to avoid aggroing everything like i tend to do!  I mean, who can say no to a flying lion?  I'm going to ignore the fact that i normally am not a fan of flying mounts.

Come say hi to Aldee on Area-52.  I'll probably be running back to my corpse after pulling one too many mobs.  It's hilarious playing a 9 year old game for the first time.

When i first began playing EQ2 and started looking for a UI replacement for the ugly default one, i turned to ProfitUI much like everyone else.  Ironically, this sort of went against my minimalist preferences when it comes to UI's in general.  While it eliminated certain frames such as the SoE bar, it also introduced many others.

EQ2 UI
Original layout

The first frames i got rid of were the top and bottom stat strips.  I simply had no need for all those numbers being on my screen at all times.  Despite being able to resize and edit which ones i could actually show, i preferred them on my character sheet instead of on my main UI.  Also hid on this screenshot is my maintained spells window.  It's there if i need to scroll over it and cancel anything, but remains hidden until i need it.

EQ2 UI
Updated layout

My most recent layout changed a few more frames.  Gone are the top player frame and currency windows.  I wasn't happy with the options for the HP frame and the currency was again not needed on screen and better left on the character sheet.  Along with replacing the player frame, i also changed the target and implied target to something a little bit larger and easier on the eyes.

Finally i replaced my cast bar as well as the enemy cast bar and resized both to the length of my hotbars. While the enemy cast bar is not in this screenshot, it's the exact same size as mine and located right above it. Moving to my auto attack bar next, i got rid of the unnecessary text depicting "melee or ranged".  You'll also notice an entire hotbar of my maintained buffs also missing.  They're also hidden until i scroll over them which eliminates more screen clutter.

It's a work in progress which I'm sure will change tomorrow or the next day.  For now, this seems to suit my needs gameplay wise while remaining pleasing to the eye.  I'm sure to stumble upon another piece that i must have but this will last me a while i believe.

World of Warcraft Hunter

Thanks to the holiday, i had a lot of time to get some leveling done in WoW.  It didn't take me long to obliterate my previous high level of 8.  It must have taken some serious dedication to get up to that stratospheric level a few years ago.  All jokes aside, i actually stuck with it this time and managed to hit 55 on my Hunter.  That was pretty much the goal i was trying to hit before the weekend ended.  Now i can retire Hunter for a while and concentrate on Death Knight til cap and beyond.  Hopefully it doesn't take me long to get used to the new play style after 55 levels of letting my pet do everything.

World of Warcraft Death Knight

World of Warcraft Death Knight

At one point i considered myself the biggest anti WoW advocate there was, despite never giving the game a chance.  It was around three years ago that i was talked into giving the free trial a go for the first time but i could never get over the art style.  I've always preferred the eastern art direction to MMO's and still do really.  Of course those games tend to suffer from an all style and no substance approach that never seems to last.

Well today i did something i said i would never do.  I'm giving WoW another crack and actually leveling past 5 this time.  Blizzard has a black Friday sale going on for $4.99 for the full game and $9.99 for MoP.  I figured for 15 bucks, how could i go wrong?  If anything i get 30 days worth of entertainment for for that low price.

Unfortunately for me, the class i really want to play is unavailable until i get another class to 55 first.  I'm speaking of Death Knight of course.  Coming from Dark Knight in FFXI and onto ShadowKnight in EQ2, the class and play style really fits what i enjoy.  For now i selected a Hunter to level until i hit that magic level where i can swap over to DK.  Hopefully i don't embarrass myself on the way!

I almost never play a female character unless it's a Korean MMO.  You're almost required to in those games since 95% of the playerbase seems to play them and, in all honesty, they look really good.  I rolled a female human for now until i can go human male for DK.  Yeah yeah - I always play as a boring human since none of the other races really ever appeal to me.  Here's to hoping i make it to 55.

EQ2 - The Nexus Core

I've been running the Nexus Core advanced solo for about a week now.  It seems to be the zone that drops weapons, among other items of course.  What I've been trying to acquire is a sword or great sword upgrade of some kind.  As per my typical luck, or lack there of, I've been cursed with bow after bow after bow.  It's actually kind of hilarious at this point.  I don't even look at the loot chest anymore since it's been a bow of some kind so often.  I'll be in complete shock when a sword actually does drop.  For now, I'm at 7 bows and 3 hammers.

With winter beta around the corner, i figured i'd start talking about Wildstar a little more.  By that i mean talking about it at all of course.  I planned on being pretty quiet about it until i actually got a chance to play and see if my interest continued.  What the hell though!

My initial reaction was fairly negative right off the bat mostly due to the art style.  After all, it's the same reason i could never get into or take WoW seriously.  It certainly has grown on me in the last year to the point that i can overlook it and focus on other aspects.  Those aspects are what I'm really interested in and hope to try out in a month or so, provided i actually get into the beta.  For now, a few videos to hold me over until then.

It's official.  I'm now a Shadowknight Samurai after completing the new armor quest chain in Vesspyr Isles. That along with my katana pushes me over the top of ridiculousness.  I love it though so all is good.  Speaking of ridiculous - the stat explosion in this expansion is just that.  I went from 70,000 HP to close to 400,000 in full tank gear.  It's absolutely crazy across the board mob wise as well.  Time to start working on the new advanced solo zones for yet more upgrades.

Also hurray for another new mount from the quest chain as well.  It looks sort of creepy instead of badass or scary but a free mount is a free mount.  Fear the samurai on the back of the froglizardbat flying above your head!

Tuesday marked the release of EQ2's 10th expansion - Tears of Veeshan.  With it came a ridiculous amount of changes to stats along with more stat explosion.  The list of new stuff is too long to list here so I'll just mention the core features.  Full info can be found here.

  • New class – Channeler
  • New Dragon-themed AAs
  • AA limit increased to 340
  • New overland area, Vesspyr Isles
  • 9 new dungeons
  • 2 new raid zones
  • More Tradeskill and Tradeskill Apprentice Items
  • New PvP item tier
The new overland zone is a bunch of floating islands, which I've always loved.  Sure it's been knocked a bit for repeating the same theme as the Kingdom of Sky expansion, but it's to be expected.  Let's see if it's as fun as that zone.  Time to completely re-gear and probably respec my AA's.

Yes yes yes technically they're called cloaks but, let's be honest, these are capes.  LOTRO has the actual cloaks covered while EQ2 has the hoodless cloaks, or capes.  Either way, i love both and make it a habit of collecting as many variations as i can.  Sure it may kill my inventory and bag space but i could care less as long as i collect them all!

I currently have 30 cloaks sitting in my bag for when i feel the need to change up my appearance.  This actually happens quite often as i get bored of the same look every day.  The majority (90%) are from quest rewards or drops from dungeons. A few of them i purchased off the broker really cheap and one is a perk from pre-ordering the expansion which drops tomorrow.

Unfortunately, and as with every cash shop type MMO, all the best looking cloaks are only available through the Station Cash store.  As tempting as some of the models on there are, i'm avoiding them for now.  I'm not sure why considering my actual armor skin is from the shop but the cloak will have to wait.  Hopefully the expansion has a few more quested cloaks i can add to my collection.

EQ2 Cloaks

EQ2 Disc of Dreadful Omens

After 30 days of accumulating daily reward tokens, i had enough to blow on a bunch of interesting items.
My options were between a few large capacity bags, the seven year veteran reward prestige home, and a selection of flying disc mounts.  There were a lot of other options but none i really even considered.  It took everything within me to not select the prestige house and instead go with one of the four mounts.  I chose the one disc that i thought went really well with Shadowknight.  I'm coming after you, Mistmoore Crags Estate, after another 30!

EQ2 Throne of Fear

Continuing on with my advanced solo rounds brings me to Throne of Fear.  Imps, eyeballs, and my mercenary being his typical useful self.  By that of course i mean being completely useless as only they can. I'm starting to notice their lacking as the levels get beyond 90 but at least they bring some comedy relief once in a while.

EQ2 Sleeper's Tomb

Another day and another advanced solo under my belt.  This time i ventured into the Sleeper's Tomb instance and i now can see why most people don't farm this one for loot.  Being my first attempt, as well as not being max level, really slowed down my completion time dramatically.  I was making pretty decent time until i hit the final two bosses which i kind of screwed up mechanically.  With good gear and max level, I'm sure i could cut this time in half easily at some point down the road.  Hurray for play speed options on YouTube.

EQ2 Shadowknight 95

Thanks to an extremely fun and sometimes crazy Skyshrine group, i managed to hit 95 on my Shadowknight. This makes my first ever max level character of any kind in EQ2.  Despite my actual account being over four years old, i never managed to hit cap at any time.  This was mostly due to other MMO's i was involved in as well as never having the time to really sink my teeth into EQ2.

I suppose i can sort of thank the free heroic character promotion from last month for getting me motivated to play again.  In reality all it did was get me ten levels but that seemed to be enough to get me going and actually stick with it.  The largest motivator has definitely been the doing away with of gear unlocking through the cash shop.  That's just something that i believe held a lot of players back that were not subscribers.  Way to go SoE on that one for sure.

How much am i actually enjoying the game thus far?  Well, enough to go ahead and purchase the expansion. Tears of Veeshan will be launching in less than two weeks and i'm ready to go!  Ready to pretty much replace all the gear I've acquired through running all these advanced solo instances.  The raiders I'm sure have it much worse which is why I'm glad that i will not be getting involved in that yet or probably at all.  For pre-ordering the expansion, i got a pretty snazzy new cape. Bring on the new grind!

EQ2 Veeshan Loyalty Cloak

Some days i can't help but stare at my little Raptr widget on the front page of this blog and shake my head.  It plain disgusts me sometimes, and not because of the ridiculous hours i put into MMO's.  It's a hobby and i enjoy the genre along with all the games i play.  What annoys me more than anything is what's at the top spot and will probably continue to be there for a while to come.

It drives me nuts that Aion is at the top spot as I've grown to really dislike that game and the time i spent playing it.  I believe the game itself lasted me an entire year, which ironically is longer than any MMO has lasted me since.  That's another topic altogether and a rather complex one at that.  It doesn't change the fact that i wish i could have that time back but a silly wish is silly.

The actual top spot should really be Final Fantasy XI which i lived and breathed for way too long.
Unfortunately there was no Raptr back then and i'd only started using Xfire briefly towards the end of my run.  I put a ridiculous 1300 game days played into that game which comes out to something like over 31,000 hours played.  This is the last screenshot i actually have with my play time checked from early 2010 (ignore the terrible spelling of my name due to server transfers screwing it up):

Final Fantasy XI

It was a different time back then when we had to be on call 24/7 for world spawns, obviously not counting when we were at work.  That is, unless you had a job where you could play from work, which i didn't.  It was also a time when we never really logged off due to setting up bazaar's to sell goods tax free outside of town.  Let's also not forget the amount of AFK time spent at world spawn camps pretty much just reading forums and gossiping over Vent/TS.  I'd say only a third of that time was actually spent playing the game which would still make it my most played MMO.

EQ2 Temple of the Faceless

Continuing my journey through the signature quest timeline brought me to Temple of the Faceless advanced solo instance.  While i briefly watched a quick video before entering, i obviously didn't pay any attention to the final boss mechanics!  I enjoyed a few deaths followed by a massive face-palm after i realized what i was doing wrong.  My basic dragon bashing to-do and not to-do list finally came back to me.  It had something to do with it's breath and not standing in it.

EQ2 Anashti Sul

I figured it was about time i select my deity in EQ2.  Normally this quest is started at level 25 but i put it off until level 90 for some unknown reason.  Out of all the possible options i decided to go with Anashti Sul which seemed to fit my Shadowknight best.  She provides a buff that increases my spell damage along with boosting base stats in the form of a pet servant.  I tend to just hide pets since I'm not a fan but i still get to maintain the permanent buff.  She also provides a list of ten short duration and long cool-down buffs which i will not get into now.

EQ2 Anashti's Undying Servant

Along with the buffs and pet, the quest chain also rewards a few altars to pray at which are placed in your home.  Doing so pulls up an option window to select one of the ten buffs i mentioned earlier.  The final reward is yet another cape which would have been decent at the appropriate level but now goes into my cape collection!  Sorry General Zod, i bow before Anashti.

EQ2 Altar of Anashti Sul

EQ2 Cloak of the Forgotten

Upon hitting 92 and having my fill of Withered Lands, i headed up to Skyshrine for the first time.  I began my experience with the zone by getting my butt whooped almost immediately by a three pack of heroic mobs.  After of few hours of the same stubbornness, i gave up trying to solo and headed back inside the safe zone.  Luckily there were three solo instances to run for gear upgrades, which i probably needed before trying to solo there.

These instances were basically solo versions of the same public map i was trying to solo on but much easier.  In all honesty these are probably way too easy but they seem like a quick way to possibly gear up for other content.  I did manage to die by not knowing what to expect ahead of time mechanics wise but that was half the fun.  Hopefully i didn't embarrass myself!

One of the first things i talked myself into doing once i upgraded my character to a heroic version was to unlock and hire a mercenary.  I decided to go with Stamper Jeralf which should be no shock to anyone I'd imagine.  It seems to be the most popular and used mercenary and with good reason.  He's a Ratonga Inquisitor which meshes well with my Shadowknight.  He heals, cures, and rezzes my butt when i go overboard with how many mobs i think i can pull.

There were some other options i considered briefly but in the end i went with Inquisitor.  With my current gear and basically only having mostly adept level spells, a healer just works for what i can do.  Sometimes all those life leeches i have are simply not enough, but that may also be due to my insistence on overdoing it in every situation!

I of course had to change his name to Didymus since i love Labyrinth.  Using some of the random drops i had accumulated and tossing them on him made him look somewhat respectable.  If anything, it hides his ratness!  Now if he could only talk me out of trying to fight mobs ten levels above me, we'd be golden.

EQ2 Stamper Jeralf

EQ2 Stamper Jeralf

Shortly after completing my Sedition, a few of us began work on the Epic Repercussions quest chain to upgrade our fabled weapons to the mythical versions.  Little did i know that the quest i just completed to obtain the epic weapon itself can be completely bypasses now before the upgrade.  Something i wish i knew before all the time spent doing the first part but i digress.  While these weapons are essentially just for looks at this point, the buffs that come with them are the reason for doing the chain.  They seem pretty ridiculous to me.

The quest chain itself seemed pretty short until i realized all the prerequisites that were required.  Before i could even start i had to go back and learn the dragons language.  In order to learn that language, i had to go back and learn the giants language!  Then came the Fiery Jewel of the Underfoot quest.  Those 3 quests took the better half of Saturday to complete, but i was ready to run some dungeons for the final chain.

It amazes me how much fun doing quests like this can be when you actually get to run dungeons with friends instead of running around solo for hours doing prerequisites and all the back and forth stuff.  We got our butts kicked for a few hours having to rely on my healer mercenary to keep us alive, but it was tons of fun. The end result was a glowing red sword to match, well, nothing else on me!

Also as part of the reward, along with the sword and abilities, came a sword model to toss up on the wall in my house.  Now i need some books to go with all those empty shelves.
